"Our experience as language trainers
has shown us that the biggest boost to communicating effectively
is in the correct use of VERBS - And in particular "MODAL"
and "AUXILIARY" verbs.
Hey - don't switch off!
Yes, we know the word "VERBS"
is a turn-off and MODAL and AUXILIARY sound even worse! But we
PROMISE what follows is quite painless and is the KEY for
you to say a lot in German with a minimum of effort
Again - we've done most
of the work for you.
Verbs are ACTION words - pretty well every
sentence we say has a
verb in it and most sentences have modal or auxiliary verbs too
which - as their names imply - MODIFY and HELP the meaning so
that
you can:
SAY A LOT MORE THINGS
WITH JUST A FEW MORE WORDS
Here's a reminder of the mini pronunciation
guide we gave you in your program.
Pronunciation guide:
1. CH in German is pronounced as the CH
in the Scottish word LOCH - but if you find that
difficult you can say a K - which is how the Bavarians
in Southern Germany pronounce it).
Now look at this English sentence and its German equivalent ...
I EAT CHOCOLATE - ICH ESSE SCHOKOLADE
OK - so it's a statement just saying that
you eat chocolate and you
need to learn three words to say it - so what?.
But look at how you can:
MODIFY the meaning of HOW something
happens by adding a MODAL VERB
I MUST EAT CHOCOLATE - ICH MUSS SCHOKOLADE ESSEN
I CAN EAT CHOCOLATE -
ICH KANN SCHOKOLADE ESSEN
I MAY EAT CHOCOLATE
- ICH DARF SCHOKOLADE ESSEN
I WANT TO EAT CHOCOLATE
- ICH WILL SCHOKOLADE ESSEN
I LIKE TO EAT CHOCOLATE
- ICH MAG SCHOKOLADE ESSEN
You are saying completely different things
by just adding these words
and it looks even easier to say it in German than it does in
English!
If you learn MUST, CAN. MAY, WANT TO,
LIKE TO in German and if you learn - say - just a DOZEN what
we call MAIN VERBS like TO EAT you'll have the basis for saying
literally HUNDREDS of things because you'll already have quite
a few words from your Fluency
